The Constellation of Hydra

Location in the sky Its Right Ascension is 10 hours And its Declination is -20 degrees .

Prime viewing months It is best seen during the nights of March and April. You can see some of Hydra when you see its star, Alphard. It appears on February 12th.

Alphard and the Gamma Hydrae The Alphard star is the brightest in Hydra while Gamma is the second. Alphard is the common name which came from a Arabic term meaning, “The solitary one.” While its Bayer name is α (Alpha) Hya. Gamma Hydrae is the common name and its bayer name is γ (Gamma) Hya.

Mythology The meaning of the name, Hydra is: “a dragon killed by Hercules.” The myth behind Hydra is Hercules fighting a nine headed water snake named, Lernaeas Hydra. With a ability to grow two heads when one was cut off and another ability of one immortal head. Hercules managed to defeat Hydra with the help of his nephew, Iolaus who burned the head stumps after Hercules cut them off which stopped the heads from regenerating. He stopped the immortal head by burying it underneath a rock. This task was also a little hard for Hercules as Juno sent a crab to nibble on his feet while battling hydra.

Trivia ‘Hydra’ is a fighter jet featured in two video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft auto V. Part of Hydra is located in Brazils flag. Hydra is the largest and longest out of all the constellations. There’s an Island named Hydra. ‘HYDRA’ Is a fictional Terrorist group in marvel comics. The Hydra 70 is a type of missile. Hydra is some type of genus bacteria. Hydra was a 2009 low budget monster movie.
