Journal #1 Kite Runner (Ch. 3-4)  In Chapter 4, Amir confesses, “The curious thing was, I never thought of Hassan and me as friends either. Not in the usual sense, anyhow. Never mind that we taught each other to ride a bicycle...build a camera….spent entire winters flying kites… Never mind any of those things. Because history isn’t easy to overcome. Neither is religion. In the end, I was a Pashtun and he was a Hazara. I was Sunni and he was Shi’a, and nothing was ever going to change that. Nothing” (25). 1. However, then Amir admits: “But we were kids who learned to crawl together, and no history, ethnicity, society, or religion was going to change that either” (25). Explain the impact that living in the hierarchal culture has impacted BOTH the character Amir and Hassan. WHY is history hard to overcome? CAN we overcome these divisions? HOW? 2. What does Rahim Khan mean when he says, “Children aren’t coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors” (21). Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Explain. What kind of child do you think Baba expected? Does Amir fit his expectations? Explain. Discuss Amir’s relationship with his father. Can you relate to Amir? Why or why not? If you decide to have children, what do you expect your own children will be like?
