WHAT IS QUALITY? We quite often use the phrase “poor Quality” or “good Quality” but what does “Quality” actually mean?

Which of these are quality products?

QUALITY IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF SOCIETY Examples Airlines On-time, comfortable, low-cost service Health Care Correct diagnosis, minimum wait time, lower cost, security Food Services Good product, fast delivery, good environment Postal Services fast delivery, correct delivery, cost containment Academia Proper preparation for future, on-time knowledge delivery Consumer Products Properly made, defect-free, cost effective Insurance Payoff on time, reasonable cost Automotive Defect-free Communications Clearer, faster, cheaper service

DEFINITIONS OF QUALITY General definition: excellence Product-based definition: quantities of product attributes User-based definition: fitness for intended use; meeting or exceeding user expectations Value-based definition: quality vs. price Manufacturing-based definition: conformance to specifications

QUALITY DOES NOT OCCUR BY ACCIDENT What does the stakeholders actually want? Identify, understand and agree stakeholders requirements How are you going to meet those requirements? Plan to achieve them

ACCREDITATION

Accreditation: definition A formal, public judgement made by an independant body, based upon an evaluation of quality, guaranteeing that basic standards are met

Accreditation Process Institution self-study Reviewing team Institution visit (3-5 days) Report draft Sending the report to the institution for feedback NCAAA Decision

What are the resources the information get from? -use of reference points: the information required as part of the quality assurance and standards framework. A self evaluation document (SED). -the mid-cycle progress report. -information submitted by representative of students. -reports on the institution by the agency or other relevant bodies within the duration of the review cycle. -information acquired during the briefing visit, and the review visit.

Role of students Student representation at Faculty and programme level. Faculty representatives are elected to sit on Faculty committees . Programme representatives are elected by the students from each year to represent their interests at all levels.
