Apply for a mobility period Where can I go as a student? Destinations vary from study program to study program (first selection via de online tool except for Yenching, Washington Center and Travel grants to the South) Application procedure Please consult the grant co-ordinator of FEB Every stay abroad, that is part of your studies (study period, internship, thesis research), should be registered online via KU Loket: https://www.kuleuven.be/english/admissions/outgoing/applicationprocedure https://www.kuleuven.be/english/admissions/outgoing/aanvraagprocedure

Info session “safety, health and paperwork” Online info session for students travelling outside Europe Topics: passport and visa, insurances, health, vaccinations, safety tips, theft prevention, emergency situations, information for those who stay at home The online session will be available from November 2018 on. An online questionnaire will be available in order to prove that you “joined” the online info session.

Intercultural preparation Intercultural preparation (1 day) for students travelling to a developing country Topics: intercultural communication, living and working in the South, communicating your experiences,… Please make sure to register in advance for a session in Dutch or the session in English (for international students) This preparation day is also offered in Dutch in Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt (Please consult the website). Note: participation is obligatory for students applying for a “Travel Grant to the South” When Where Time Language Saturday, November 24 Leuven 9:30 till 16:30 Dutch Saturday, March 23 Saturday, April 6 Saturday, May 4 Saturday, November 3 Brussels English second semester (date to be confirmed)

Scholarship programmes – in general Each scholarship programme has its own requirements/features: Destination, period of stay and kinds of activities Grant amounts Exchanges in pair possible or mandatory … Selection procedure: faculty + central + external body Current selection criteria (focus differs from programme to programme): study results, motivation, letter of recommendation, academic relevance,… Extra financial help or necessary support for student mobility In case of equal applications, students belonging to certain categories may be prioritized and may receive a higher grant. Students with a study allowance from the Flemish Government Disabled students recognized by VAPH Working students Students known by the Social Service of KU Leuven

A scholarship, extra financial help or necessary support? In order to identify students that may be eligible for additional funding or priority selection, the students have to agree that their personal status is being consulted. Please indicate the category of students you belong to: I am a student with a study allowance (studietoelage, studiebeurs) from the Flemish government. I am a student with a disability recognized by the Flemish Agency for Persons with Disabilities. I am a student with the official status of working student. I am a student recognized by the Social Service of the KU Leuven. (f.e. almost entitled to receive a study allowance, reduced tuition fee, other vulnerable socio-economic situation) I contact the Social Service of the KU Leuven in order to find out whether I belong to category 4. (it takes 4 weeks to examine – better contact Social Service prior to 15 February) I belong to none of these categories.

Priority Average study results +70%, CSE 100% Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized and may receive a higher grant. Duration 1 – 12 months Exception Turkey: internship 1 month, study 1- 2 months Grant 650 euro/month with a maximum of 2.600 euros + travel allowance between 320 and 1.100 euro Students known by the university’s Social Service may receive an additional 200 euro/month Doc. ASEM-DUO - China, India, Vietnam, South Korea What Study in a partner institution of your faculty in one of 4 Asian countries. Exchange in pairs is mandatory. For whom Bachelor’s or Master’s students from all faculties. Nationality is not a criterion Priority Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized and may receive a higher grant. Duration Minimum of 4 months (120 days). A stay longer than 4 months is allowed, however without a scholarship. Grant 650 euro/month for the KU Leuven student, 800 euro/month for the Asian student Travel allowance of 1.100 euro Students known by the university’s Social Service may receive an additional 200 euro/month Doc. Generic grants – all countries outside Europe What Study, internship or thesis research in a partner instiution of your faculty. For whom Bachelor’s or Master’s students from all faculties. Nationality is not a criterion Priority Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized and may receive a higher grant. Duration Minimum 1 month to a maximum of 12 months. Grant A semester grant amounts from 1620 to 4500 euro, depending on destination and financial needs A stay longer than 4 months is allowed, however without a scholarship. Students known by the university’s Social Service may receive an additional 200 euro/month Doc. Travel Grants to the South What Internship or thesis research in a developing country, in cooperation with a host institution in the South. For whom Bachelor’s or Master’s students from all faculties. EU-nationality + Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Participation in the intercultural preparation day and the session on “safety, health and paperwork” Priority Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized. Duration At least 6 weeks in the South Departure between December 1, 2018 and December 1, 2019 Grant 1.000 euros for each travel grant student. Doc. Travel Grants to the South Where can you go and why? Countries Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo DR, Ethiopia, Guinee, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzaniia, Uganda, Zimbabwe Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Palestine, Philippines, Vietnam Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, Suriname KU Leuven will finance a limited number of Travel Grants to the following 8 countries, that are not on the VLIR-UOS list: Chili, Colombia, Ghana, India, Malawi, Nepal, Paraguay, Zambia Host institution University, NGO, governmental agency, hospital, etc. Support Support from the KU Leuven promotor / internship promotor Supervision by the local contact person / supervisor Purpose Field experience in a developing country within an academic context Personal development Raise students’ awareness of North-South issues For the partner in the South: to be involved in the student’s activities and benefit from / gain knowledge through the results

CSC-scholarships - China What The Chinese government provides grants to study one year in China. For whom Bachelor’s or Master’s students from all faculties. Students with Chinese nationality are not eligible for this programme. Priority Students with a keen interest in China, its culture and its language. Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized. Duration 1 year Grant Tuition waiver + monthly allowance of 2.500/3.000 CNY + accommodation on campus in a shared room + basic health insurance Doc. The Washington Center What For whom Priority Duration Grant Doc. Grants for internships in an international organization in Washington. For whom Bachelor’s and Master’s students from the faculties of Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Business Nationality is not a criterion. Academic excellence: GPA-score of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (minimum distinction) The internship has to be part of the student’s KU Leuven study programme Priority Students, known by the university’s Social Service, may be prioritized and may receive a higher grant. Duration 1 semester (15 weeks) Grant 9.000 euros (average total cost is 15.000 euros !) Students known by the university’s Social Service may receive an additional 3.000 euros/month. Doc.
