Presentation transcript:

Royal K. Abbott Jr. (8/30/1915 – 8/5/2006) Troop 9 Stamford, Doc Abbott: ROYAL K. ABBOTT JR. – a longtime resident of Stamford died peacefully at home Aug. 5, 2006, at age of 90. Born August 30, 1915 in Canton, MA to Muriel and Royal Abbott, he attended high school in Needham MA and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937. He then obtained his doctorate in chemistry in Freiberg Germany and Iowa State University. His career spanned 50 years working for General Electric, Pfizer, and Bristol Meyers Corporations. A long time supporter of Boy Scouting, “Doc” Abbott was a committee member and Treasurer of Troop 9 in Stamford CT. He was honored with the Silver Beaver Award for over 50 years of Scouting in 1998. Doc devoted over 75 years to Scouting, many of them with Troop 9, helping our boys to develop into responsible young men.

Boy Scout Troop 9 established the Doc Abbott High Adventure Scholarship Fund to honor Doc Abbott's "scouting spirit". The fund is used to encourage and financially assist our older boys to plan, undertake and experience "high adventure" types of Scouting activities. These experiences have included, 50+ Mile canoe trips, National Jamborees, High Adventure Bases, extended scouting camping including backpacking trips to Philmont Scout reservation in New Mexico and Sea Base adventures in Florida. These exceptional events help form lasting Scouting memories and serve to help older boys retain their commitment to the Scouting program.   Our Eagle Scout ceremonial “Doc” Abbott Coin, minted in 1923, the year of the founding of Scout Troop 9, is presented and maintained by the most recent Eagle Scout in Troop 9 and passed to the next Eagle Scout upon his achievement to the rank of Eagle Scout. The Doc Abbott High Adventure Fund is an ongoing perpetual scholarship fund that accepts contributions from anyone wishing to promote and encourage these goals and activities. This scholarship fund is separate from the normal operating funds of the troop and is dedicated solely to High Adventure camperships. Please contact Troop 9 to learn more about making donations to replenish the Doc Abbott High Adventure Fund.
