Presentation transcript:

Sabre-toothed tigers are some of the best known and most popular of all Ice Age animals. They are among the most impressive carnivores ever to have lived. Two different types of sabre-toothed cats lived in the Midwestern U.S. at the end of the last Ice Age. long. The sabre-toothed had short, powerful legs.

One type was the familiar sabertooth, represented by the genus Smilodon. These cats had enlarged canines (Teeth) usually associated with the name sabre-toothed. Their canines were up to 18 centimetres (7 inches)

These animals were not built to run fast or far. The sabre- toothed was probably an ambush hunter. It would have stalked its prey or attacked large animals from a hiding place. Sabre Tooth Tigers probably feasted on large animals such as, horses, mammoths, buffalo, deer, and antelope. Sabre Tooth Tigers lived in North America and South America. The sabre tooth tiger was one of a kind. There are no close living relatives today but palaeontologists reconstruct the skeleton of a sabre tooth tiger to some of the largest living cats today.

No they are not alive now because they were hunted down by other animals. Smilodon (Greek: "Knife-Tooth") is an extinct genus of large machairodontine sabre- toothed cats that are understood to have lived between approximately 3 million to 10,000 years ago in North and South America. They are the only known successors to Machairodus. Smilodon means knife tooth, an entirely appropriate name given its enormous fangs. The smilodon species are also known as Sabre-Toothed Cats or Sabre-Toothed Tigers.

The most distinctive features of these tigers are their overgrown canine teeth. Up to 9 inches long, these teeth hang over the tiger's bottom lip in a fearsome ivory curve. These teeth can inflict the most horrendous damage as they rip through the flesh of the tiger's prey. their teeth

PRONUNCIATION: sabre tooth cat TRANSLATION: Knife Tooth GENUS: Smilodon DESCRIPTION: Carnivore, Quadrupedal PHYLUM: Chordata CLASS: Mammalia ORDER: Carnivora FAMILY: Felidae SUBFAMILY: Machairodontinae HEIGHT: 8 feet (2.4 meters) LENGTH: 4-5 feet ( m) WEIGHT: 440 lbs (200 kg) PERIOD: Pleistocene to Early Holocene Epoch

Sabre-toothed tiger pounced it prey but was not very fast well the grizzly bear is strong and very fast plus normally Tigers tire very easily. I think the Grizzly wins due to endurance and its strength.. I don't even count the large teeth as a factor because they were know to break easily. Also, the sabre tooth tiger would have to wound the bear through its belly.. Since the grizzly walks on all fours unless threatened, this wouldn't happen

Sabre tooth tigers weigh around 200kg 440lbs. They weigh that much for a special reason, its for pouncing and getting there prey onto the ground A sabre tooth tiger hunting they hunt in pack

Tigers communicate through many means. They have vocal communication, body language, and scent communication. Their vocalizations, such as roaring, growling, or purring, are used to tell other tigers how they feel, usually in a negative way. Body language is used to communicate fear, aggression, happiness, or a willingness to mate. When fighting, the aggressor will have his or her ears erect, teeth bared and the tail straight out, in a defensive posture.

The Saber-Tooth Curriculum was the invention of New-Fist, the first great educational statesman, theorist, and practitioner. It was he who first observed that children should engage in purposeful activities rather than to play with colored stones just for the fun of it. New-Fist was a thinker! He noted that children seemed to have no purpose in their play beyond immediate pleasure in the activity itself. He compared their activity with that of the grown-up members of the tribe. It was New-Fist who first posed the question: "What things must future tribespeople know how to do in order to live with full bellies, warm backs, and minds free from fear?" The answer was the skills sets of the future Paleolithic Workforce.
