Year Nursery (Class HP) Curriculum Overview Term Autumn 1 Topic All About Me! Literacy, Language and Communication Mathematical Development LLC: The terms topic focus on ‘All About Me’ is designed to boost the children’s confidence and encourage them to talk about themselves, use newly learnt vocabulary and pick up books and make sense of the pictures with support and on occasions independently. We’ll focus on attributing meaning to the pictures/ mark makings that they create. We also work on the children recognising their names and attempting to make marks that resemble them. The children have an introduction to the school’s phonics programme Read Write Inc. and we help them identify the sounds and letters that are in their names. The main Numeracy focus for the Autumn term is counting to 5 and number recognition. We use lots of songs and games to encourage the children to count and mark make to represent numbers. The majority of the work will be done practically and orally, to allow the children to develop an understanding of mathematical language and concept. Continuous Provision The continuous provision in the classroom is designed so that the children can practise the new skills that they have learnt through play. All of the provision is designed around 6 main aspects of ‘All about Me!’. Ourselves, Our Body, Our Family, Where we live, Our senses, Our Emotions. The continuous provision is enhanced with new elements depending on which of the 6 areas we are working on at the time. The children will access both the indoor and the outdoor environment and will also participate in small group focus tasks. Knowledge and Understanding of the World Creative Development In line with our All About Me! Topic, the children will be given the opportunity to use lots of different mark making tools and materials. The children will make cardboard models of themselves and decorate them to look like themselves. The children will use paints to create self portraits and develop their understanding of colour. Personal and Social Development In line with our All About Me Topic the main personal and social focus is settling into school, understanding the school routine and beginning to negotiate and be considerate of others. We as a class will decide on which rules we need to follow in the classroom to make sure we are all safe and happy. The children will also learn about the importance of expressing an opinion and sharing their likes and dislikes. As part of the school curriculum, each child will have a person centred profile (PCP) developed for them which displays likes, dislikes, things important to them and thigs they’re good at. The main focus of knowledge and understanding of the world during the Autumn term is for the children to learn about themselves. We focus on the features of our faces and naming the different parts of the body. As part of the topic we will also look at where our school is and what is available to us un Ruabon. We also look at the senses and how these allow us to take in the world around us. WELSH The focus for Welsh, will again focus on our All About Me! Topic. The children will learn to tell people who they are, how they feel, what they’d like to eat and the greetings and manners in Welsh too.
