Christian Worship Chapter 1 – What is Worship Prepared and presented by Seth Porter and Delacie Barney UNCLASSIFIED

What is Worship? To quicken the conscience by the holiness of God. To feed the mind with the truth of God. To purge the imagination by the beauty of God. To open the heart to the love of God. To devote the will to the purpose of God. (See pg. 3) What is Worship?

Worship: meaning “worthy of reverence and honor” – also “worth ship” Liturgy: meaning “ministry or service” Cult: originally meant “harvest or cultivate” Terminology

Mystery – worship can bring about both mystery and revelation at the same time. Celebration – worship can be a celebration of the acts of God in history. Life – worship is synonymous with life, worship should emanate through all acts of one’s life. Dialogue – worship takes place through dialogue with God with both revelation and response. It is an encounter or experience with God. Offering – worshippers offer and sacrifice their lives for their faith and obedience, it is an action, not just speech. Eschatological fulfillment – worship is the working out of salvation. Describing Worship

“If God is to be the priority of our lives, individual and corporate, then the activity that acknowledges God’s supremacy, worship, must be at the core of all the church does.” - pg. 8 Worship – not church growth – must be the church’s priority. God must be worshipped for God’s own glory and for nothing more or less. Reality in Worship
