This situation is not unlike the one in which Oedipus finds himself in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. Oedipus, the King of Thebes, must save his city from a plague that is destroying the people of his city, the source of which turns out to be a direct consequence of the actions of men. Sophocles uses the motif of pollution to show how people who are too proud to accept responsibility for their actions bring tragedy on themselves and those around them.
