On, Thursday, November 15, 2018, we will hold a trial in our classroom On, Thursday, November 15, 2018, we will hold a trial in our classroom. What you need to know: In every fair court case there are two teams; the Defense (Defendant) and the Prosecution. Each of you will be assigned to one of these teams this week. I will be the Judge in this case.

Defendant If you are selected to be a Defendant, your job will be as follows: You will convince the Judge to DROP the charges of theft brought against Roger by the District of Columbia for stealing Ms. Jones’ purse. You will state why Roger SHOULD NOT be punished for his mistakes by using text evidence to defend your argument.

Prosecution If you are selected to be a Prosecutor, your job will be as follows: You will convince the Judge to NOT drop the charges brought against Roger by the District of Columbia for stealing Ms. Jones’ purse. You will state why Roger SHOULD be punished for his mistake by using text evidence to defend your argument.

Preparing for Trial Tomorrow, I will separate you into two teams; the Prosecution and the Defendants. For tomorrow night’s HL you will prepare your argument. Use slides number 3 and 4 and the next slide with the Rubric to help you. Write your reasons and text evidence on an index card. REMEMBER: you must use text evidence to support your argument. Wednesday I will allow you to meet with your team to share your reasons and evidences and continue to prepare your arguments.

Rubric

Rubric You will receive 1 point for the first part of the rubric just for sharing and idea. To receive the maximum amount of points you should share 3 things in the discussion- whether it be an idea, an evidence or an argument.

Closing Arguments Once you are separated into the Prosecution and Defense teams, I will choose one person from each team to prepare the team’s closing argument. The point of the closing argument is to remind the judge WHY Roger should or should not be punished for his mistake. Sample closing arguments are on next slide.
