Reality, Virtually Jordan Katter

What is Virtual Reality (VR) Virtual: Almost or nearly as described, but not completely or according to strict definition. Reality: The world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Virtual Reality is a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be interacted with by the person who is immersed inside the virtual world. That person can manipulate objects and explore freely. Virtual + Reality = Near Reality.

VR Origins It’s hard to pinpoint the exact origins of VR because many people claim the title of creator in one way or another. Below is a list of people claiming that title: Morton Heilig Jaron Lanier Ivan Sutherland Myron Krueger

VR Creators Morton Heilig Created the Sensorama (1957) and developed it further in the 1960’s. The Sensorama gave a one of a kind experience of riding a motorcycle through the streets of Brooklyn. This was a multi-sensory machine that played a film (created with a Steroscopic color display) where you could feel wind (created with fans), seat vibrations (created with a motional chair), and smells of the city as you virtually rode through it (created with odor emitters). Ivan Sutherland Created The Sword of Damocles, the first VR head-mounted display (HMD) system in 1968. He referred to this system as “The Ultimate Display.” Jaron Lanier Founder of VPL Research (1984 – 1990), one of the first companies to develop and sell VR products, such as: The Data Glove, The Eyephone, and The Data Suit. Myron Krueger Created Glowflow, Metaplay, Psychic Space and Videoplace. Videoplace is considered to be his major piece of work. He began creating Videoplace in 1975. Videoplace allowed two people in separate rooms, close by or thousands of mile apart, to communicate with things like typing messages or drawings.
