A Brief Overview of EMUI 9.1 Graham Faulkner

EMUI 9.1 was recently released along with Huawei’s P30 series of smartphones. Compared to EMUI 9.0, which introduced many new features, EMUI 9.1 is a smaller update. Many of its changes involve design and performance refinements. There has been a concerted effort to make the UI more concise. Page 2

Two apps renamed Two important apps were renamed in EMUI 9.1. Phone Manager was renamed as Optimizer. And Dialer was renamed as Phone. .

Phone Manager The words Phone Manager could not be fully displayed on the home screen.

Dialer User testing revealed that many younger users found the word Dialer to be odd. Our main competitors use the word Phone. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1

More concise design Settings menus in system apps became more concise. Organization was improved. Some features were deleted. .

Phone Manager 8.0

Optimizer 9.1 Consolidated settings menu in Optimizer

Face recognition Condensed and more concise design. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1

Similar simplification in the clock app Similar simplification in the clock app. The overall settings menu was canceled. Settings were relocated into each tab. Clock EMUI 8.0 EMUI 9.1

Scheduled power on/off Two features were combined into one. This change makes the entire menu much more concise. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1

Newly added features

Huawei Share The functionality of Huawei Share has continued to expand. It started out similar to Apple’s AirDrop – but now incorporates more functionality.

Access files on the phone from a computer. Huawei Share Print Access files on the phone from a computer.

AR Measure AR Measure is similar to Apple’s Measure app. However, in addition to measuring straight lines, it allows you to measure the area of a flat surface, the volume of a square or cubic object, and the height of a person.

Fingerprint sensor in Power button The Mate X features a fingerprint sensor that is built into the power button. When the screen is off, there are two ways to wake and unlock:

Network acceleration This is a new feature that lets apps use mobile data at the same time as Wi-Fi. It doesn’t work for all apps. It can be found in Settings > Wireless & networks. Apps must be connected to Wi-Fi first.

Highlight Reel and Spotlight Reel These two features are found in Gallery. They are different from the Highlights feature. Highlight Reel begins with a video with several subjects. It automatically compiles a shortened version with the best moments of each subject. Spotlight Reel does the same, only the best moments all focus on one person (for videos with only one subject)

Camera – Dual-view The new Dual-view feature lets you take video on two rear cameras at once, using different zoom levels. The bottom view is wide-angle, and can’t be edited. The top view is zoomed in, and the zoom level can be manually adjusted.

Always On Display The AOD now displays app notifications, battery level, and missed call notifications. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1

Improved logic

Motion control 9.0 The Motion control menu, found in Smart assistance, was redesigned and renamed for EMUI 9.1. The original menu had several logic issues.

Shortcuts & gestures 9.1 The redesigned section is called Shortcuts & gestures. In the redesigned menu, each item begins with the intended action.

Personal hotspot 9.0 The Tethering & portable hotspot section was also renamed and significantly simplified for EMUI 9.1. In 9.0, users had to go several menu layers deep to access the personal hotspot settings.

Personal hotspot 9.1 The personal hotspot menu is now the first thing you see when you open these settings. Other tethering settings are moved to the next level down.

Other changes

Camera - Location tag The GPS tag switch was renamed for higher accuracy. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1

Camera - Stickers The Watermark feature was renamed as Stickers for higher accuracy and to avoid repetition with the Watermark feature in camera settings. EMUI 9.0 EMUI 9.1
