The work due in for today is: FLIPPED LEARNING D.I.R.T Rewrite one paragraph of you essay on Henry VIII’s foreign policy, based on your ebi comment and D.I.R.T focus number Make sure your economy guide is complete – this includes writing about how prosperous the economy was under Henry VIII The work due in for today is:

How important was the role of key individuals and groups during the reign of Henry VIII? RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups Key Words: Monarchy Ministers Impact Dominate Serve How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments?

Who were the key individual and groups during the reign of Henry VIII? Before we start analysing, and making judgements about the role of key individuals/groups, we need to remember the key individuals/groups during Henry VIII’s reign TASK: In your notes, write down a list of individuals/groups that you think could come up on the exam INDIVIDUALS GROUPS Wolsey Wives Cromwell Factions More RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

What was the relationship like between Henry and these individuals/groups? Firstly, each table is going to be given an essay, that relates to the key question of key individuals, during the reign of Henry VIII. You need to individually write down the question you have been given. ‘The King’s ministers served Henry VIII well, but served themselves even better.’ Assess the validity of this view in the context of the years 1515 to 1540 ‘Thomas Wolsey had a more significant impact on the Church than Thomas Cromwell, in the years 1515 to 1540’. Assess the validity of this view ‘The wives of Henry VIII had a greater impact on his policies than anyone else’. Assess the validity of this view. To what extent did Factions dominate Henry’s policy making in the years 1509-1547? RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

Introduction An introduction is an opportunity for you to show the examiner that you understand the question, and that you are a confident historian who has an opinion on historical debates. To demonstrate this in an introduction, you: Define key words in the question Outline a criteria which determines how you will measure the point of analysis Put forward your judgement, that will be argued in every, single paragraph TASK 1: Individually, in silence, write down your definitions and criteria TASK 2: Now, compare your definitions and criteria with the person next to you TASK 3: Now, you are going to share your findings as a table, and come to an agreement on the definitions and criteria you will use in your essay. Write these down on a whiteboard. RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

Main Body Planning your main body can be difficult, in that it is hard to determine how much needs writing down. Therefore, I am going to model how to plan a paragraph, and then you will use this as a basis to plan your own paragraphs. TASK: One side of the table are going to organise the FOR points, and the other side the AGAINST paragraphs. You need to plan as many paragraphs as possible, as in the next part of the lesson you are going to try and find a single judgement, and select the paragraphs that fit that judgement. RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

Creating a judgement Studying A Level History makes you a historian in training (how exciting!!!) An integral part of being a ‘proper’ historian, is having a opinion on historical debates, and consistently arguing it. You now need to work as a table to compare your paragraphs, and see if you can find a central line of argument. This argument should not be simplistic (i.e. a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response). Instead it should seek to be nuanced (complex). You can often start nuanced judgements with the phrase ‘it depends on….’ RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

Putting it all together INTRODUCTION FOR AGAINST CONCLUSION RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups

Plenary: Which individual/groups held the most power over Henry VIII in the years 1509-1547? TASK 1: Rank the key individuals/groups in terms of the power they held, by recreating the diagram, and putting their name in the relevant box. Wolsey More Cromwell Factions Wives TASK 2: Write a paragraph that justifies your decision. RECALL the different key individuals/groups under Henry VIII EXPLAIN what the relationship was like between Henry and the individuals/groups EVALUATE the power held by key individuals/groups
