Meet the team Jasbir Bilkhu Intervention Teacher

Transition into Year 1 and Year 2 How are we preparing? The children in Reception have had regular visits to their new Year 1 class during the Summer Term. During these visits, the Reception and Year 1 children have been able to meet their new teacher, socialise with their new classmates and familiarise themselves with some of the new routines. All of the Reception children have also been attending Key Stage 1 class assemblies.

Routines in Key Stage 1

Morning drop off and afternoon pick up Morning drop off is in the main playground at 8:50am The children will line up with their class and be brought inside by their class teacher. Afternoon pick up is from the KS1 classroom doors on the infant playground at 3:30pm. Please note that if your child is a Hedgehog, then you should wait near the fire exit doors in the Infant Playground At these times, you will have the opportunity to chat to your child's class teacher. If there is a change to the person who usually picks up, then it is important that you inform the class teacher or school office.

Lunch time The children will continue to have their school dinner and packed lunches in the dining hall as normal.

Uniform Please ensure that your child is wearing the Round Hill school uniform and black school shoes. For P.E, your child should wear black shorts/black joggers, a white t-shirt and plimsolls/trainers. PE kits should be left at school and will be sent home every half term. Wellies and ‘Wild Area’ clothes should be brought to school at the start of the year and left in school. Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

What does your child need to bring to school on a daily basis? Your child will require: Key Stage 1 planner School bag (preferable one of the Round Hill book bags) Guided Reading book and trolley book Water bottle (clearly labelled with your child’s name) Depending on the weather- coat, jumper/cardigan and sun hat

Planners Each child will be given a planner. This needs to be brought to school every day It contains important information about school. We use it for: -Home-school communication - A reading diary - A classroom resource - A home/school agreement

Teaching and Learning in Key Stage 1

Teaching and learning in Key Stage One Mornings: Phonics English Maths Guided Reading Afternoons: Topic (cross curricular learning including history, geography, art, science, design and technology, computing) P.E Music

Maths Your child will be taught in single age classes. The school will be continuing to use a maths scheme called ‘Maths No Problem’ which has been successfully implemented across the school. Please see your child’s planner for information on the different methods used to support mathematical calculations.

Phonics Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Children will use the knowledge they are taught in phonics to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read. Phonics is taught every morning for 25 minutes. The children are put into groups according to their strengths and areas for development.

Reading Guided Reading (group reading book) A new group reader will be given to the children every Monday. This is chosen by the teacher at the appropriate level for their reading ability. Trolley book- The children can choose a book from class trolleys on a Friday. If your child has already read their trolley book, then they can swap it before this day. The trolley books can be a good opportunity to share a story and to discuss what might happen next, explore characters etc.

Topics There will be an exciting range of lively and interactive topics. Some of these will include: This is me! Sensational Seasons and Wonder Weather Explorers Who lives in a house like this? Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!

Marking Following guidance from OfSTED and recent research into effective feedback, Round Hill have made changes to their marking policy to reflect this. There has been much evidence to suggest that the most effective feedback to move on children’s learning is verbal feedback. As a school we have trialled various methods of feedback and are trying- where possible- to give your child verbal feedback either during their lesson or shortly afterwards.

Marking This has proved to be very effective and feedback from the children has been that they prefer this to written comments. What you will notice: Less written feedback – Blue highlighter – Peer feedback - Editing using purple pen – progress!
