FSA Writing The STEPS to SUCCESS

STEPS 1.Analyze the prompt 2.Read the sources with a PURPOSE -If it is INFORMATIVE: look for evidence and underline as you go! -If it is ARGUMENTATIVE: look for evidence to support 1 side of the issue!

STEPS 3.Make a quick outline (organize your evidence) of the basic parts of an essay: Write this out on the sheet of paper provided! Introduction and Thesis Body Paragraph #1: Quote (Source#) Body Paragraph #2: Quote (Source#) Body Paragraph #3: Quote (Source#) *If argumentative, this should be the paragraph with the counterclaim and rebuttal Conclusion

Essay Parts Introduction: Hook Transition sentences Thesis Body Paragraphs (Are all structured the same) Point/Topic sentence Evidence/Direct Quote with citation Explanation Conclusion: Restate Thesis Closing sentences

Practice PROMPT: Our country is divided in its opinion about the issue of illegal immigrants and whether they should be made to go back to their countries or become US citizens. As US citizens they will pay taxes and receive social benefits. Think about your opinion about the issue of illegal immigrants. Now write to convince your legislature to accept your opinion. *Identify ALL keywords in the prompt!

Planning Using the prompt analysis, you can now read the sources and underline information to help you either INFORM or ARGUE a point! Consider that you need evidence from multiple sources! Highlight the evidence as you read the sources! Now you are ready to fill in the outline (on the separate sheet of paper) and begin writing the essay.
