Akbar the Great (1556-1605) Babur’s Grandson Muslim Know for his policy of Tolerance Opened government jobs to Hindus Hindus were treated as partners in ruling the empire Ended tax for Non-Muslims Consulted with leader of many faiths: Buddhists, Hindu, Christian Paid officials instead of using Heredity for Jobs.

Decline of the Mughal Empire Akbar died in 1605 Shah Jahan began decline – spent too much money building Taj Mahal in his wife's honor; completely draining the treasure Late 1600s: His son ruled. Was not tolerant of other religions Empire looses support of Hindu majority. Revolts and heavy taxes lead to weakened empire European traders take advantage and gain control. His reign marked the high point in Ottoman power and culture The Safavid dynasty came out of the political chaos and anarchy of the Persian Empire to dominate the region and create a short-lived empire. The Mughals established an empire which united the Hindu and Muslim kingdoms in India for over 300 years.
