Lesson Goal: Learn about correct word usage. Outcomes: Be able to . . . Identify three pairs of word that are commonly misused for each other. Apply the correct word usage in any given sentence. Determine which words are in error and which are used correctly in any given sentence.

Starter #1: Take out your comp book. Turn to the first blank page Starter #1: Take out your comp book. Turn to the first blank page. In the upper right hand corner, write the following: Tues., March 19, 2019 QW #50: Another Interview If you had a chance to interview someone in norther Kentucky or Cincinnati about her/his job, who would you want to interview and why? Write down the name of that person, explain why his/her job interests you, and list the questions you would ask.   Remember to write in complete sentences, avoiding fragments and run-ons. If you are not sure how to spell a certain word, just sound it out and circle it.

Starter #2: Yesterday we began a new unit in grammar, one that targets the most common mistakes made in word usage when choosing between two words that sound alike or are similar. Today we are going to continue with three new pairs. . . .   beside means “next to” The ducklings waddled beside their mother. besides means “in addition to” Besides the goldfish, we have only one pet.

Starter #3: The second two words are . . . between Use between for two people, things, or groups The pizza place is between the laundromat and the drug store. among Use among for three or more people, things, or groups A little boy was among those hurt in the accident.

Starter #4: The third two words are . . . choose means “to select” Harriet didn’t know which drink to choose. chose means “already selected” (past tense of choose) Yesterday the kitten chose the ball of string to play with.
