The historical significance of the battle was that Allied forces learned that any future invasion of the French coast would have to be accompanied with air and sea support. Such a strategy was utilized in June 1944 when Allied forces successfully landed at Normandy beaches. D-Day is the day when Canadian and Allied troops began to push German forces back towards Germany, firmly establishing a much needed Western Front in France.
