Presentation transcript:

I need to make my own certificates (stocks)  $100 of cotton, concert tickets to see Drake, $100 dutch Bros, etc.  We made some stuff they would like and stuff like cotton, steel, crops etc.  You can make whatever you want.  We wrote them on a piece of paper and students drew out of a bucket.

Activity Overview Fun, simple experience for all students Lesson: “Trade creates wealth” Students trade certificates that have value Class “satisfaction” rises as trade expands

Procedure Examine your certificate Tell class what you got Rate satisfaction on 0-10 scale (Zero being least satisfied and 10 extremely satisfied) Record first round Trade: No stealing or taking

Procedure Round 1 Local Trade: Student are able to trade with their shoulder partner, they do not have too only if they wan to. (2-3 min trade time) Rate satisfaction Round 2: National trade: Student are able to trade within groups of 4-5 (3-5 min). Rank satisfaction

Procedure Round 3: International Trade, student are allowed to trade with everyone in the room. (5 + min) Rate satisfaction score

Results Total satisfactions score rises with each round of expanded trade

Discussion Did anyone not trade? What happened to the total satisfactions score when you were able to trade with more people? What was your individual goal or purpose during the trading? What did you learn about trade?

Discussion While each person was trying to make them self better off the whole trading process, the society classroom or economy was better off Fundamental principal of economics—People pursing their own self interest is naturally inclined to trade Trade creates wealth The more people we can trade with the more wealth is created
