TOPIC 8: Problem Solving & Decision Making By: Nur Salimah Bt Alias

What it is? Decision-making is closely related to problem solving, sometimes difficult to distinguish and there is also a confusion that both is the same skill. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are two different things and has its own uniqueness.

Mind boost 1: Decision making or problem solving? Imagine you are a doubles badminton player in college you and your friends have moved to other colleges. Who would be your new partners that will be invited to work with you?

Mind Boost 2: Decision making or problem solving? Ahmad sees too many popular foods selling in the college cafeteria. With just RM5.00, what foods can he buy?

Mind boost 3 : Decision making or problem solving? A teenager involved in drugs tries his best to get to the right path

Mind boost 4: Decision making or problem solving? You have an appointment with a friend. You are late, your car keys are missing. What should you do?

Difference? Decision-making can be defined as a mental process involving the person choosing the best options from a number of options available based on the purpose and specific criteria. Meanwhile, solving problems is a mental process to overcome the barriers faced by specific goals and criteria.

Importance of Decision Making Skills Prevent us from making mistakes while thinking and take actions that will not benefit us. Make use of existing information sources. Consider and evaluate all the options available. Able to make the best selections. Reflection before implementing an action. Acting on a decision made based on the criteria and purpose

Imagine you and your friends are in the National Park for hiking activities. As the day gets darker, you and your friends realize you are lost in the forest. What action should be taken?

To facilitate your understanding and clarity about what to do, please answer the following questions: What choices do you have? List them down. a. What choices do you have? List them b. What can you do with the options? c. How do you decide which is the best option? d. Based on the options and the reasons that have been identified, what decision would you have taken? Why? e. Describe the measures taken to achieve based on question (d).
