Body of Evidence Action Reference in Japanese Culture Avoiding eye contact Eye contact is not a sign of honesty or confidence; rather, it is a way of challenging or threatening another. Having direct eye contact with someone of a higher status is considered especially impolite. Expressionless face This usually indicates a lack of understanding of a question or circumstance, or not knowing how to respond to a question. Straight-backed posture An upright posture shows that an individual is taking things seriously and has had a good upbringing. In fact, the line of the back indicates good character to the Japanese.

Close Reading of First Paragraph Where do you see the Culture Clash? Identify his body language as positive or negative from both Western cultural and Japanese cultural standards. Pull out text based examples.
