Creating Criteria: Class Rubric Presentation by Kim Decatrel

DATE: AIM: How do we establish the criteria by which our explanatory essays will be evaluated? DO NOW: Look over your HW. Rank the different categories by level of importance, from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least. In your journal, write about why one area is more important than another.

DATE: AIM: How do we create the criteria by which our writing will be evaluated? DO NOW: Make a list… What should an explanatory essay be graded on? List all the things an explanatory essay needs to have to get an A+. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Organize Your Ideas Now look at your list. What items are related? What categories should each fall under? Re-organize the items on your list by circling or grouping or color coding or making a chart, etc. Up to you. Be prepared to explain the rationale behind what you’ve done.

Explanation Criteria Choose 5 items from your list. Copy each onto 5 different sticky notes. 2. Stick each note onto the poster where you think it most closely belongs. 3. Listen for next steps.
