Unlocking the secrets of how extraordinary leaders Inspiring Leader Unlocking the secrets of how extraordinary leaders MOTIVATE John Zenger Joseph Folkman Scott Edinger

Establishing and Managing a Great Expectations Leadership Team What are the initial steps for organizing? Who will serve on the GE Team? What are Team Members’ responsibilities? How often do GE Team Members meet as a team? How often does the GE Team communicate with new or all staff members? What are the benefits of establishing a leadership team?

Leadership is based on a spiritual quality, the power to inspire others to follow. Vince Lombardi

Creates the following outcomes: The Inspiring Leader Creates the following outcomes: 1. New behaviors and outcomes 2. New attitudes and emotions, such as: Confidence Optimism and hope Initiative Responsibility Enthusiasm Resilience

The Inspirational Leader = a leader who can stimulate others to achieve higher levels of performance

How to Organize and Manage a Great Expectations Site Leadership Team (Teacher Leader) Speak with the principal Discuss benefits/options with principal Invite the Great Expectations Instructional Coach to assist (optional)

Who Serves? Those persons who have the ability as a leader to inspire those about them. This becomes the closest to being that all powerful solution.

Team Members’ Attributes The following three attributes are the cornerstone of what it takes to inspire and motivate others. Role Model Change Champion Initiator

The most effective leaders were excellent role models. Simply put, they exemplified what the organization stood for and how it wanted people to behave.

How Leaders Become Better Role Models Lead through example Maximize exposure Selectively model behaviors that need to be emphasized in the organization Seek feedback regarding inconsistencies between a leader’s behavior and the espoused values of the organization

Change Champion Persuasion is at the heart of the matter It’s the results of the change that matter Recognize those that made it happen and they will do it again

The following six leadership behaviors are the specific behaviors it takes to inspire and motivate others. The more of these six behaviors a leader demonstrates, the more their ability to inspire and motivate. Setting stretch goals Creating vision and direction Communicating powerfully Developing people Being collaborative and a good team player Fostering innovation

Creating Vision & Direction The leaders orchestrate a process that creates a concise, compelling, and clear vision for the organization. GE Team Members introduce themselves to all staff members GE Team shares the vision and/or site status with staff GE Team meets with new staff members to discuss the team’s role

Strategies Cont’d This vision combines a strong statement of the guiding principles that shape the organization with a vivid picture of what it aspires to be in in the next few years. GE Team surveys the staff for implementation needs GE Team addresses staff needs

Strategies Cont’d Meet with the staff to discuss online resources http://www.greatexpectations.org/resources Practices, Rationale, Life Principles, Eight Expectations and other available resources Great Expectations Connect http://www.greatexpectations.org/connect

Strategies Cont’d 3. With this vision clearly stated, a clear line of sight can now be established between the role of GE Team Leaders and the individual’s understanding of Best Practices implementation and site goals. Strategies: Create a GE Boot Camp at the beginning of the year or schedule one per semester (if needed) Video students demonstrating the seventeen practices to share at staff meetings, with an individual team member or with grade level teams/PLC

Strategies Cont’d Share GEMS weekly (Great Expectations Motivational Strategies) Post encouraging quotes for staff members Send complimentary notes Send notes to say ‘thank you’ Celebrate

Initiator Right or wrong, well executed or not, with or without an effectively managed team, nothing says leader like being the initiator. The energy and driving force behind any movement requires a catalyst, and in the role of initiator, a leader has the responsibility to “get the ball rolling.”

Initiator Decisiveness (increase) Accountability (step up) 3. Risk (calculated) Page 81

Benefits of Establishing and Managing a GE Leadership Team This clarity of direction also resolves questions about what is trivial and what is titanic. All systems and new initiatives can now be brought into alignment around the vision. Effective strategies and optimum tactics flow more easily from this clearer vision for the organization.

If people are coming to work excited, If they’re making mistakes freely and fearlessly, If they’re having fun, If they’re concentrating on doing things Then somewhere you have a leader. Robert Townsend
