Human Dentition Human beings have two sets of teeth: a deciduous set a permanent set

Human Dentition The teeth are divided into four groups according to their form: Incisor group (I) Canine group (C) Premolar group (P) Molar group (M)

The deciduous dental formula I 2/2 C 1/1 M 2/2 = 10

The permanent dental formula I 2/2 C 1/1 P 2/2 M 3/3 = 16

Each tooth has a crown and root portion Tooth Anatomy

Tooth Anatomy The crown portion is the part covered with enamel and the root is the part covered with cement. The crown and root join at cemento-enamel junction or cervical line. The main bulk of the tooth is composed of dentin. the pulp cavity contains the pulp tissue.

Tooth Anatomy The clinical crown: is the erupted part (crown or root) of the tooth seen in the mouth. The anatomical crown: is the part of the tooth which is covered with enamel .

Tooth Anatomy The root portion of the tooth may be single with one apex as found in all anterior teeth and some of the premolars, or multiple with a bifurcation or a trifurcation dividing the root portion into two or more roots as found in all molars and some premolars.

The part of the jaw that forms and supports the socket of the teeth is called "the alveolar process" of the maxilla or the mandible. The gingiva is a soft tissue in the mouth, which covers the alveolar bone and surrounds the tooth.
