Spanish Mission Simulation

Spanish Mission Simulation Take a moment to answer the questions in the graphic organizer at the top of your handout: Why do you think the Spanish will explore and settle in Texas? What kind of relationship do you think existed between the Native Americans and the Catholic priests? How will life in a Spanish Mission affect the culture of Texas?

Vows In order to participate in today’s activity you must complete your vows: Vow of Poverty: All items and “worldly goods” must be in the designated area of the classroom. Vow of Obedience: Students will fulfill the obligations of this vow by following all the directions given by the priests during the course of the activity. Vow of Silence: Students will remain totally silent throughout the duration of this simulation. Repeat this: “I vow, for the duration of the entire activity, to give up my personal possessions, to obey the rules of the ‘mission’, and to maintain total silence.”

Spanish Mission Stations For each station you will have an activity to complete- for 5 minutes. First read the directions and complete the task. After five minutes, you will be given 3 minutes to complete the questions on your handout while still at the station. Do not break the mission rules- I will give you a much more difficult alternative assignment if you cannot take this seriously!

Closure How did the Spanish settlements shape present day Texas? (Write in complete sentences and name 3-5 things).
