Unit 1: Skills By Mohammad Farran

READING There are 3 types of reading skills: 1. Skimming – When you read quickly to get the general idea (newspaper article, report) 2. Scanning – Reading quickly to get a particular piece of information (cinema schedule, TV Guide) 3. Intensive reading – When you read slowly and carefully (textbook, novel) ~Read page 5 + do exercise 4~

WRITING Punctuation – Use capital letters for: 1. First word in a sentence 2. People’s names 3. Titles (Mr, Mrs, Dr) 4. Cities & countries 5. Languages 6. Names of companies ~Don’t forget to use a full stop (.) at the end of a sentence & a question mark (?) at the end of a question. ~ Do exercise 1 on page 6~

WRITING How do we join sentences together? We can use words like ‘and’ & ‘but’ to connect two sentences together. ~ Do exercise 7 on page 7~ When we write and describe people and talk about what they do, we usually use the simple present tense. ~ Do exercise 10 on page 7~

~ Do exercises 1 + 3 on page 8~ VOCABULARY Parts of speech in English: 1. Nouns (names, things) 2. Verbs (doing, action) 3. Adjectives (describe nouns) 4. Adverbs (describe verbs) 5. Prepositions (small words) ~ Do exercises 1 + 3 on page 8~

Unit 2: Skills By Mohammad Farran

READING Predicting what will happen next when you read is a very important skill. ~Do exercise 3 on page 10~

WRITING A paragraph is a group of sentences that talks about one main idea. To describe a daily routine, we usually use sequence words like: first, next, after that, so, then, finally to show that one thing happens after another ~ Do exercises 4 + 6 on page 13~ The word ‘while ’ is used when two things happen at the same time. Example – I drink coffee while I’m watching TV.

~ Do exercises 1, 2 & 3 on page 14~ VOCABULARY When you learn a new word, learn its collocations - the words that go with it too. Example: tooth + brush tooth + paste tooth + ache tooth + fairy ~ Do exercises 1, 2 & 3 on page 14~

Unit 3: Skills By Mohammad Farran

READING Remember when you scan for information, you are quickly reading a text to find specific information. You can also use headings to help you. Headings are short titles for paragraphs. ~Do exercises 1-4 on page 16~

READING Sometimes you can guess the meaning of a difficult word from the words around it (the context). So context clues are hints that help you define difficult words. Example - After losing the battle, the army was in a deplorable state. What do you think the word deplorable means? ~Do exercises 6 on page 17 + handout~

~ Do exercises 1 - 3 on page 18~ WRITING We use apostrophes ( ’ ) for two things: a) Possessions – Ali’s car / Mariam’s book. b) Contractions – I’ve / Can’t / They’re ~ Do exercises 1 - 3 on page 18~

~ Do exercises 4 + RULES on page 18~ WRITING We use adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never) to show how often we do things. Examples - I always study on the weekend Sarah never goes to the cinema Ali is usually late to class. ~ Do exercises 4 + RULES on page 18~ ~ Do exercises 6 on page 19~

VOCABULARY Our brains like pictures! Use drawings and pictures to help you remember words! Squirrel Robot Umbrella Watermelon ~ Do exercises 1 on page 20~

GOOD STUDY HABITS We all have our own way of studying, but here are a few tips which should help you study more effectively: Find a quiet place to study. Study when you are fresh and not tired. Get plenty of exercise and sleep well. Find a study partner, it can sometimes help. Take notes when you read or when the teacher talks. Make a study plan for the week.
