Bell ringer: In your composition journal – What do you know about the panama canal?

Connecting Two Oceans As early as the 1500’s, Spanish explorers wanted to create an artificial water route (canal) through the Central America isthmus. Trade routes from the Atlantic to the Pacific required a difficult journey across land or a long water passage around the tip of South America. A canal would significantly reduce the time it took for ships to travel from Europe to the Pacific.
