11.2 translations Essential Question: What does it mean to translate a shape?

Transformation changes into another figure (position or orientation) Preimage: Original figure Image: The resulting figure (Notated as A’ is read “A prime” to represent the new point on the image that corresponds to point A of the original figure)

Video: How do animators use math?

Types of Transformations Translation = slide Translation The figure slides along a straight line without turning. (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) Each points move same distance and direction

Example 1:

On Your Own:

Demonstration Graph to translate quadrilateral ABCD 5 units left and 3 units down. x y Start at Blue Figure: Each vertex is moved five units left and three units down. B A 4 D’ C’ B’ A’ 2 C –4 –2 D 2 4 –2 Do as demonstration – next example they will do on paper –4

Example 2:

They have to be able to show this this type of table when determining coordinates of image.  There is a question on the test in which they do not get a coordinate plane...only coordinate. They need to practice this on the next slide

Example 3:

On Your Own:

On Your Own: A triangle has vertices X(5, 4), Y(-6, 1), and Z(0, 9). After a transformation, the coordinates of the image are X (1,9), Y (-10,6), and Z (-4,14). Describe the transformation. _____________________________________ (x-4,y+5) On homework

Summary: Review your notes Summary: Review your notes. Describe, in your own words, what you learned. Discuss what you learned with your shoulder partner. Summary:
