Fundamental III: Climate & Engagement Position Statement: School staff use relevant student data (race/ethnicity, student behavior, student access, family engagement, school climate, academic achievement) and effective practices when making decisions to optimize the learning environment to ensure student success. Kudos to all of you for your work to create a positive climate for our school community and to engage stakeholders in lifelong learning! Today, our general focus is on the connections between our Equity Framework and climate and engagement.

What is Social and Emotional Learning? MTSS/ PBIS Core Curriculum & Instruction Inclusive Practice Climate & Engagement Professional Growth What is Social and Emotional Learning? SEL is a process for helping children and adults develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness. SEL teaches the skills we all need to handle ourselves, our relationships, and our work, effectively and ethically. The trees on this slide represent WCSD’s priorities. The definition for SEL is located “under the trees” in order to illustrate that SEL is foundational for all of the district priorities. Let’s take a few moments to look at the definition for social and emotional learning. Please read the definition to yourself and notice any words or phrases that are especially meaningful to you. Here are some things you may have noticed: SEL is a process, not a program. Why are both adults and students included in this definition? Think about your experience of arriving here today. What knowledge and skills did you need in order to participate in this session? It is evident that learning SEL skills is a lifelong process.

What is Social and Emotional Learning? Responsible Decision-Making SEL is a process whereby young people and adults acquire knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to five competencies: Self-Awareness Responsible Decision-Making Self-Management Let’s look at the five core competencies of SEL: These five core competencies are inter-related; our emotional responses, thinking, and actions are intricately connected; brain research confirms that strong emotions can override our higher-order thinking. Our emotional state also influences our ability to attend to, concentrate, and remember what we learn. SEL helps us develop our ability to recognize and manage our emotions so that we can think clearly, choose wisely, and act deliberately. It also helps us become interpersonally effective, by learning to build healthy and productive relationships and to be responsible decision-makers. Finally, research confirms that these skills can be taught (it’s more than a way of being smart), and outcomes for students improve when they develop SEL competence. In fact, many of the most effective prevention and intervention efforts teach SEL skills. Relationship Skills Social Awareness

https://howsecureismypassword.net/ https://howsecureismypassword.net/  Experiment with: Letters Numbers Special characters Length (number of characters) What seems to make the greatest difference?

A computer attack can try 350 billion passwords per second This means it is possible to check every possible eight-character password containing upper- and lower-case letters, digits, and symbols in less than six hours. Does your password fall into that category? https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/12/25-gpu-cluster-cracks-every-standard-windows-password-in-6-hours/ https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/12/25-gpu-cluster-cracks-every-standard-windows-password-in-6-hours/

Try a passphrase instead: Unfortunately, passwords like c0mPl3X1ty are difficult for people to remember, and easy for computers to guess Try a passphrase instead: Pick 3 to 5 random and unrelated words Create a mental image or phrase that connects them Now it is hard for a computer and easy for you!
