Moodle Assignment Marking and Feedback What are the icons for? An Introduction

What do these icons do? Using these tools will help you to add more specific feedback to your students’ work. The next sections will highlight the options for each tool and what these look like on the page. This icon is the highlighter tool, for highlighting portions of text. These icons are the rectangle and circle tools. The rectangle tool is recommended for circling text as it is more precise. This icon is for adding ‘stamps’ to the page, for example an ‘x’, a checkmark, or smiley. This icon controls what type of stamp you are using. The options are an ‘x’, a checkmark, a smile, or a frown. This icon controls the colour of the free-writing, line, rectangle, circle, and highlighting icons. This icon is for selection, i.e. to click on marks you’ve already added to the page. This icon allows you to view and search all the comments you’ve added to a student’s work. This icon allows you to switch between pages in a student’s work. This icon allows you to expand or collapse all the text comments (speech bubbles) on a student’s work. This icon changes the colour of the written comments (the speech bubbles). This icon is for navigation, i.e. to drag the page up and down. This icon is the line tool. It is good for adding strike-throughs and cross-outs. This icon is the free-writing tool. Use this icon to draw directly onto the page. This icon is for written comments. They will appear as speech bubbles on the student’s work.

Using the Text Comment Icons These two icons control text comments. To change the colour of a text box, first click the text comment colour icon first, then select your preferred colour from the drop-down menu. You cannot change the colour of a comment once it has been created.

How to add a Text Comment Step-by-Step Instructions After you have chosen the colour for your comment, click on the text comment icon. Click and hold the left mouse button on the page where you want the comment to appear. Draw a square on the page using your mouse. Release the button when you are happy with the size. A blinking cursor will appear automatically, so you just need to start typing. To save, click anywhere on the page. Comments ‘collapse’ and appear as speech bubbles.

Using the Visual Comment Icons These icons control the visual comments. To change the colour of a visual comment, first click the ink drop colour icon before choosing the free-writing, line, rectangle, circle, or highlighter; then select your preferred colour from the drop-down menu. You cannot change the colour of a comment once it has been created.

How to add a visual comment Step-by-Step Instructions After you have chosen the colour for your comment, click on one of the comment icons. Click and hold the mouse button to draw your desired comment. Release the button when you are happy with the writing, shape, and/or size of your comment. Releasing the mouse button will save your comment. Note, visual comments are often used as a substitute for handwritten comments and editors’ marks.

Using the Stamp Icons These icons control the stamp comments. To change the type of stamp comment, first click the stamp choice icon (by default a Red ‘X’ Symbol); then select your preferred stamp from the drop-down menu. You cannot change the type of stamp once it has been created.

How to add a stamp Step-by-Step Instructions After you have chosen type of stamp for your comment, click on the stamp icon. Click the mouse button anywhere on the page to add your desired stamp. Note, stamps do add a personal touch to your marking for students. The checkmark icon in particular has a positive connotation and can be used to highlight good parts of the work.

How to move and delete comments Step-by-Step Instructions To delete text comments, Click the ‘Collapse/Expand’ button on the top of the toolbar to expand all text comments. Click the icon in the left corner of the comment box to open the options. Click ‘Delete Comment’ To delete visual comments, Click one of the visual comments, which will highlight it in purple. Click ‘Trash’ icon to delete the comment. To move any comment, click the cursor icon in the top toolbar, then click the comment to move it.
