Inspector Calls Revision for Paper Two C/L Tuesday 21st November 2017 Inspector Calls Revision for Paper Two

We are members of one body we are _______________________ for each other responsible

My revision tips Re-read the opening stage directions and have a sticky note for each stage direction in your room. Mr Birling in opening stage direction is “heavy looking portentous man” (portentous = significant and it shows how he thinks he has power and as factory owner he abuses that power) Read the whole play in ONE sitting with a highlighter in one hand! Read over the inspector’s final speech and all the persuasive techniques he uses. Have at least 3 key facts about 1912 lodged into your head!

WHICH OF THESE AO3 (CONTEXT) FACTS ARE TRUE AND WHICH ARE FALSE? Discuss with your partner. Do not write anything down until told! J.B Priestley was a socialist, that means he believed in all of society particularly the lower classes in being treated fairly. He formed socialist groups as well. In 1912, women were subservient to men and the best they could do was marry and they couldn’t vote. The average working week in 1912 was around 34 hours. The difference between the classes wasn’t that big in 1912. Labour won by a landslide victory in 1945 after WW2.

IT IS 56 HOURS The difference between the classes wasn’t that big in 1912. There was a huge divide between the classes and this increased ignorance and angered Priestley. Labour won by a landslide victory in 1945 after WW2. CAN’T WORK MORE THAN 48 HRS A WEEK NPOW

What is socialism and what is capitalism? Socialism – the idea of democracy where every class profits from our economy not just one. Capitalism – a system where people drive to profit over others. Industries are privately owned.

Paper 2- what do I do? Essay on Inspector Calls 45 minutes Comparing the Power and Conflict Poems Unseen Poetry A- Write about one poem in 30 minutes B- Compare it to a second poem in 15 minutes

INSPECTOR CALLS ESSAY

HOW TO WRITE THE ESSAY? Have an introduction where you give a bit of context, mention Priestley’s message to try and change attitudes and teach his audience about learning from past mistakes and state a link to the question. If it’s a character question I would have a sentence like: Priestley uses Mr Birling as an exaggerative reflection on upper class men who ignore their social responsibilities so that it teaches both a 1945 and modern day audience to avoid being like Mr Birling. 2. The essay is then you doing a quotation per paragraph covering the whole play. Analyse quotations in detail! 3. Finish with a conclusion where you state what Priestley was trying to achieve and you GO BACK TO THE QUESTION!

Key themes in this play: Age/generational differences Socialism Responsibility Guilt Change Greed Class Women Ignorance

Character questions Mr Birling Mrs Birling Sheila Eric Eva Smith The Inspector

Interesting facts about their names Sheila = to shield herself Means blind and wise so she was blind to injustice but then she became wise. Inspector Goole = “goole” ghost he is a messenger of God to warn those on earth to take responsibility for their actions and a Goole from the afterlife. Eva Smith – Surname Smith is the most common name in Britain she represents the poor and disadvantaged.

Daisy is a common wild flower links to when Inspector says “millions and millions” in his final speech. Rent – think about that action. She is used for sex by Eric and ends up renting her body in the Palace Bar. Daisy renton A daisy is a flower from the Latin “suns eye” that opens and closes. Rent also means tearing apart – clothes torn apart, her life torn apart

Your task: revise levels of guilt
