SOAPSTONE Mr. Jarot English I

SOAPSTONE INTRODUCTION SOAPStone is an acronym We use the SOAPStone method to decipher information about a nonfiction text, including the author’s attitude toward the particular topic.

Subject Who is the voice that tells the story, or in nonfiction, the author? What do we know about the writer’s life and views that shape this text? Are they a reliable source on the topic? How do you know?

Occasion What is the time and place of the piece, the situation, or context which gave rise to the writing or speech? EX: If it is a speech, why is the speech being given? Is there an event in history that prompted it?

Audience Who is the group of readers or listeners whom this piece is directed towards? The audience may be one person or a group. What qualities, beliefs, or values do the audience members have in common?

Purpose The reason behind the text Is it informative, persuasive, or entertaining? What does the speaker, writer, or filmmaker want the audience to do, feel, say, or choose?

Subject The general topic, content, and ideas contained in the text. What is this piece about in 1-2 words?

Tone What is the author/speaker’s attitude towards the topic? Is the tone positive or negative? Hopeful or critical? Light-hearted or serious? Playful or ironic? What choice of words (diction), inclusion of details, language, and use of rhetorical devices let you know the speaker’s tone or attitude?
