Addition Strategies By Mrs Oste

This is an addition sentence. It has parts you need to learn. 4 + 1 = 5 addend + addend = sum Cutie puppy wants you to remember this!

Addend + addend = the sum Can you remember that? Got that? Addend + addend = the sum

Here’s an addition sentence. 3 + 2 = 5

3+2=5 Remember that. Now watch this! What is 2+3=? 2 + 3= 5 3+2 =5 and 2+3=5 The sum is the same.

Look again at the two problems. I get it! 3+2=5 2+3=5 The addends are the same, so the sum is the same.

This is called “reversing the addends.” It helps you add more quickly! 5+3=8 What is 3+5= ? 4+2 =6 What is 2+4= ? 10+3= 13 What is 3+10=? So easy!

It’s a great idea to memorize your “doubles.” Doubles are addition sentences where the addends are the same. 1+1=2 6+6=12 2+2 =4 7+7=14 3+3=6 8+8=16 4+4=8 9+9=18 5+5=10 10+10=20

Sometimes a problem is close to a double. That’s called a near double. 4+5= 4+5 is only 1 more than 4+4. 4+5=9

The Make Ten Strategy
