What is WINTER GUARD? Winter Guard is the sport of indoor color guard. The use of equipment (such as flags, sabers, rifles, and props) is often combined with dance and interpretive movement to produce a themed performance. Winter guards can be school-based and found in middle schools, high schools, and some universities. There are also some independent Winter Guard groups.

every team will have a tarp (floor) In addition to flags, rifles, and sabers, every team will have a tarp (floor)

the tarps usually cover the majority of the performance area

some are very intricate

Many teams will also have PROPS

props come in all sizes

some props have to be sturdy enough to allow the performers to stand on them

some props include many pieces

props add visual effect and help to set the scene

The majority of the building is used during both these events

Let’s look at the exterior traffic flow…

Indoors, PERFORMERS travel throughout the entire school Before they perform, they travel on the 2nd floor and go through a strictly timed “rotation”

There is NO SPINNING of equipment permitted during Body Warm-Up! Rotation begins with “Body Warm-Up” in the Atrium There is NO SPINNING of equipment permitted during Body Warm-Up!

Teams then travel to the aux gym for “Equipment Warm-Up”

This is the only place where spinning of equipment is allowed. “Equipment Warm-Up” This is the only place where spinning of equipment is allowed.

Body Warm-Up and Equipment Warm-Up sessions are timed. Each team’s Body Warm-Up and Equipment Warm-Up sessions are timed. Each team receives a specific amount of time based on their division, and a very strict schedule is followed.
