Josephus on the tribulation of those days: That neither did any other city ever suffer such miseries, (1695) So the soldiers out of the wrath and hatred they bore the Jews, nailed those they caught, one after one way, and another after another, to the crosses, by way of jest; when their multitude was so great, that room was wanting for the crosses, and crosses wanting for the bodies... (In spite of the sight of these crucifixions before the walls of the city, sw) yet did some of them run away immediately as unto certain punishment, esteeming death from their enemies to be a quiet departure, if compared with that by famine. (1697) …When Titus, in going his rounds along those valleys (around Jerusalem,sw), saw them full of dead bodies... (1706) (The Works of Josephus, translated by William Whitson)

Jesus uses the language of temporal judgment or apocalyptic language in these verses V. 29, But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: Isaiah's prophecy of the destruction of Babylon: For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine....And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (13:10,19)

Jesus uses the language of temporal judgment or apocalyptic language in these verses V. 29, But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. Isaiah's prophecy of the judgement of Idumea (Edom): And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the Lord hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. (34:4-6)

Jesus uses the language of temporal judgment or apocalyptic language in these verses V. 30, And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Isaiah's prophecy of a judgment upon Egypt: "The burden of Egypt. Behold, the Lord rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt..." (19:1)

A time of great reception of the gospel V. 31, And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. V. 31: "ANGELS" = AGGELOUS Matt. 11:10, "For this (John the Baptist, v. 7) is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger (aggelon) before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee." Lk. 7:24, "And when the messengers (aggelon) of John were departed..."

(Matthew 24:4-33) V. 34 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zach- ariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. (Matt. 23:35-36)

"GENERATION" IN MATTHEW: "So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations..." (1:17) "But whereunto shall I liken this generation?" (11:16) "But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign..." (12:39) "Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?" (17:17) "this generation" (23:36; 24:34)
