Self Image

Self Image Please identify 4 adjectives that describe you: At home At school With friends In general

What is self image? Self image is the beliefs and attitudes (or mental picture) we have of ourselves.

Attitude and Beliefs affect how we see our self. Attitude- the way you think or feel about something. Beliefs-what you accept as true or have faith in.

Formation of Self Image Q: How do we acquire the image we currently have of ourselves of how do we come to see ourselves as being a certain kind of person? A: Our self image is formed through what others think of us and our past experiences- successes and failures.

Does self Image effect our behavior???? We tend to act like the person we believe ourselves to be. The self-fulfilling prophecy People who feel good about themselves are: More confident More satisfied Do better in school More popular

Points to Make How many self images do we have? Lots!! We should never generalize from one or two bad experiences Is our self image permanent, never changing?? No – thank goodness!!

How do we improve our self image?? Never form a negative image of yourself after one or two bad experiences. Take stock. Look at yourself as realistically as possible. Identify your strengths & challenges. Work in improving the areas where you are weak.

How to set Goals Pick a goal that is realistic Pick a goal that is manageable, that you can break down into a series of small steps or sub-goals. Pick a goal which is measurable Pick something that is meaningful to you

Tips for Achieving Your Goals Have a positive attitude Don’t be afraid to make mistakes If you don’t reach a particular goal or sub- goal don’t think of it as a failure Praise yourself for any progress, no matter how small Identify any areas that need further improvement Use your imagination
