AIM: How has the geography of China influenced her development? Define: Isolation Based upon examination of the map of the Far East, why would China be considered an isolated country? How might this contribute to the development of the country?

Geographic Facts about China Largest country in Asia World’s most populous nation (1.3 Billion people)---20% of the earths population 94% of population lives in the eastern portion of the country (2/3 of the entire country is covered by mountains)

Topography Gobi Desert: Stretches from Mongolia into Northern China Himalayas and Tien Shan Mountains Qinling Mountains separate Northern and Southern China **These features have caused China to become isolated from other parts of Asia**

Major Rivers Yangtze River Yellow River (Huang He) Xi (West River) *Grand Canal links the Yellow and Yangtze River* **China also has many irregular coastlines = Natural Harbors, good for trade
