FIRST AID What is First Aid ? Why do we need it ? How is it widespread in a global scale?

Why is the training in First Aid crucial ? The first 5 minutes following an accident are crucial. Every minute -10% of chance to survive After 3 minutes -30% of chance to survive + Irreversible brain damages If someone starts the CPR 1 minute after someone’s heart stopped 90% of chance to survive ☺

Why is First Aid not widespread in Asia and why do people hesitate to operate it? Governments didn’t make any law that forces people to attend First Aid trainings People tend to delegate emergencies entirely to the emergency service and don’t take part in safety trainings individually The majority doesn’t know what to do Some people are afraid of possible diseases transmission Some are afraid to do more harm A large majority fear to be sued if they make a mistake Bystander effect

Three different ways to form people in First Aid 1) Workplaces 2) Schools 3) Driver license

1) Workplaces

Switzerland: workplaces model Labor Law, conditions of work, companies have to ensure that their staffs work in safe conditions, have to maximize the safety of everyone and be prepared to face any potential danger at any time Mandatory Must have First Aid Strategy Highly recommended Installation of infirmeries Emergency plan known by all Training staff to First Aid ( < 100 employee) First Aid equipment reachable by anyone within 1-3 minute(s) From 100 employees -> First Aid Room well-equipped Do everything to guarantee everyone’s safety

Swiss recommendations for companies Number of staff in the company 1-10 50 100 250 >250 Number of trained rescuers 1-2 6-7 8-9 10-11 according to the official first aid plan Number of first aid material places 1 Several, the numbers need to be defined based on the first aid plans and the environment

2) Schools

Norway: school model 5 years old 8 years old 13-14 years old Learn emergency numbers and how to give their address 5 years old How to put someone in recovery position 8 years old How to make tourniquets, bandages and cardiopulmonary resuscitation 13-14 years old Later ... Save from drowning

3) Driver license

Germany: Law on Traffics circulation Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection Ordinance on the admission of future road users (Driver license regulation FeV) Art. 2 Requirement for the granting of the driver license 19 – Education on First Aid (1) Candidates for the driver license have to participate in First Aid training during a minimum period of nine lessons of 45 minutes. The training should, with theorical content and practical exercises, form a person to necessary First Aid basics

Switzerland: Law on Traffic circulation How to properly give details to the emergency service to be the most efficient Swiss Penal Code: Art.128 “Whoever doesn’t help a person in imminent danger of death while it could be reasonably required of him will be punishable by up to three years of jail or will have to pay a fine” How to maintain this person physiological functions necessary for survival until the ambulance arrive How to secure the environment and the injured person How to use a defibrillator How to make bandages, take care of small burns, protect ourselves from potentiel blood diseases transmission, recognize symptoms of strikes and cardiac arrests, handle them and how to save from choking How to stop serious hemorrhages and operate a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) How to give artificial respiration to someone who no longer breath What are the correct positions to put that person in depending on the situation

Belgium: new traffic law Order made by the government of Bruxelles-Capital region (29 March 2018) to change and add some modalities in the driver license exam. -> November 2018 THEORY PRACTICE 1-2 hours 3 hours

Training more people to First Aid helps building communities that are less vulnerable and more resilient. Developing First Aid training is an excellent way to make people more aware that their own skills and behaviour make a difference to everyone’s health and safety.
