Roles of a media specialist Stephanie Gauthia Roles of a media specialist Stephanie Gauthia, Roles of a Media Specialist

Introduction Stephanie Gauthia Media specialists today are so much more than little old ladies who read stories and tell you to be quiet in the library. Today’s media specialists are….. managers facilitators programmers teachers collaborators tech specialists researchers advocates Today’s media specialist wears many hats and has many different roles. This presentation will outlines these roles and how they contribute to student achievement. Hello, my name is Stephanie Gauthia and I am an aspiring media specialist. The purpose of this presentation is to share information about the essential roles the media specialist plays in a school setting and how that can support student achievement.

Roles of a Media Specialist Program Administration Information Access and Delivery Learning and Teaching In their book, Information Power The American Association of School libraries identifies 3 key roles of a media specialist: Roles identified by the American Association of School Librarians in their book Information Power

Roles of a Media Specialist Learning and Teaching The school library media specialist should work collaboratively with teachers to plan lessons. They should also teach lessons that are relevant to using the media center effectively and build a collection that reflects school interests and needs. Let’s explore these roles a bit further. The first is Learning and Teaching. The media specialist serves as a direct instructor and collaborator with teachers in educating students.

Learning and Teaching Create standards based lessons that incorporate technology and resources available in the media center Encourage each grade level to collaboratively plan at least one unit this year Attend grade level meetings to determine curricula needs. Conduct needs assessment at least two times this year to determine needs of teachers and then if those needs have been met. Teach students research skills and practices and how to use catalog resources effectively Use student input to build a collection reflective of local school interests and needs As your media specialist some of the things I would do are create standards based lessons and collaborate with teachers by attending grade level meetings.

Roles of a Media Specialist Program Administration The school library media specialist should oversee the daily operations of the local media center. The second role is program administration. This deals with the logistics of running a media center.

Program Administration Maintain records, budget, and inventory for media center materials Survey teachers to determine curricular areas that need more support. Purchase books and tests that are a part of the Accelerated Reading program. Oversee personnel that work or volunteer in media center As your media specialist, I will maintain records in accordance with district policy and purchase resources based on the needs and wants of students.

Roles of a Media Specialist Information Access and Delivery The school library media specialist should help teachers and students acquire knowledge about how to use technology effectively. The third role is information access and delivery. This deals with teaching information literacy skills to students.

Information Access and Delivery Maintain a collection that is reflective of latest technology Encourage and educate teachers in the use of technology in lessons Model effective and appropriate use of technology in teaching and learning Equip media center with resources necessary for students and teachers can create useful multimedia curriculum projects As your media specialist, I would make sure that the media center is reflective of current technology and encourage the use of technology in lessons.

Additional Roles of a Media Specialist Organize Scholastic Book Fair Author monthly newsletter for teachers Maintain school media center website or blog Promote at least one reading promotional activity per quarter Develop relationships with local business partners and community stakeholders to secure additional funding opportunities The media specialist not only serves in the areas of teaching and learning, program administration, and information access and delivery. They also support student achievement in many other ways.

Conclusion Media specialists today serve students and teachers in many different ways. Their role as teachers, collaborators, managers, and leaders all contribute to student success. They play an essential and important role in schools today. In conclusion, Media specialists today serve students and teachers in many different ways.
