Waves interact and transfer energy in predictable ways.
Waves Waves are oscillations that carry energy and information from one place to another. Examples of waves: light, sound, electricity in a wire, cell.
1 Vibration: A repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion. Energy: The ability to do work.

Waves

The bermuda triangle What is it known for? Rogue Waves: the unusual shape of the ocean floor Water Waves versus other waves: sound, light, microwaves, etc, http://www.history.com/topics/bermuda-triangle/videos/mysteries-of-the-bermuda-triangle

Why learn about waves? Wave: an oscillation that travels is a wave. All information you receive in your eyes and ears comes from waves! The light from a traffic light Ripples in a puddle of water Flowing electricity in wires Radio, TV, and cell phone transmissions The electromagnetic Spectrum

Recognizing a wave when you see a vibration move (guitar string) when something makes or responds to sound (drums) makes or responds to light (light bulb) when tech allows us to see through objects (xray) travelling info without wires (satellite)

Energy Waves are a form of traveling energy. Waves are present when: information, energy, or motion is transmitted over a distance without anything obviously moving. They are almost always invisible!

Parts of a wave Frequency: a measure of how often goes up and down. Units: sec-1 or Hertz (Hz) Amplitude: how “tall” it is from resting position to the crest or trough (THINK HEIGHT) Wavelength: the distance from one crest to the next. (or one trough to the next) (THINK LENGTH)

draw a wave

wave equation How fast is it moving? Speed: the amount of distance travelled in a certain amount of time. (Ex: mph) For a wave, it is meters per second or m/sec

Parts of the equation v = speed (m/sec) f = frequency (sec-1) or (Hz) lambda = wavelength (m)

Example the wavelength for a wave is 0.5 meter, and its frequency is 40 Hz. What is the speed of this wave?

DIY The speed of a wave is 0.2 m/sec, and the frequency is 10 Hz. What is the wavelength?

Challenge How is energy related to frequency? How is frequency and wavelength related? (Use equation!)

when waves encounter objects

four wave interactions Reflection: wave bounces and goes in new direction Refraction: wave bends as it passes into and through an object Diffraction: wave bends around an object or through holes in the object Absorption: wave is absorbed and disappears
