Example Systems

What type of cable? What video format is on the cable?

VOCABULARY WORD: Video Standard A video standard defines the following characteristics of a video signal: The resolution, frame rate, and if the signal is interlaced or progressive.

Resolution :Vertical & Horizontal pixel count

Frame Rate :The number of individual frames or images that are displayed per second.  24 fps – Film Projectors 23.976 fps – Film to video 25 fps – PAL HD video 29.97 fps – NTSC HD video 30 fps – HD Video (less common) 50 fps – PAL HD video 59.94 – NTSC HD video (Interlaced field rate of NTSC video) 60 fps – HD Video

Interlaced vs. Progressive In live production, most devices will be Progressive.

Video Standard A video standard defines the following characteristics of a video signal: The resolution, frame rate, and if the signal is interlaced or progressive. Examples: 720p60 720p59.94 720p30 720p29.97 1080i59.94 1080p24 1080p60 1080p29.97

Graphics formats vs. Video Standards Graphics formats come from computer display outputs and are not always compatible with video standards and video devices.

Cable Types – Computer Graphics

Cable Types – Computer Graphics VGA Analog Resolutions up to and including 2048x1536. Carries no audio.

Cable Types – Computer Graphics DVI Digital Can carry an “analog” VGA signal as well. Carries no audio.

Cable Types – Computer Graphics & Video HDMI Digital Includes Audio (DVI + Audio) < 50ft Only, usually less then 25ft.

Cable Types – Video HD-SDI Digital Coax cable with BNC connector. Includes Audio 8 Channels of Audio. Up to 300ft without re-clocking.

SDI Video Standard Name Introduced Bitrates Example video formats SMPTE 259M SD-SDI 1989[2] 270 Mbit/s, 360 Mbit/s, 143 Mbit/s, and 177 Mbit/s 480i, 576i SMPTE 344M ED-SDI 540 Mbit/s 480p, 576p SMPTE 292M HD-SDI 1998[2] 1.485 Gbit/s, and 1.485/1.001 Gbit/s 720p, 1080i SMPTE 372M Dual Link HD-SDI 2002[2] 2.970 Gbit/s, and 2.970/1.001 Gbit/s 1080p60 SMPTE 424M 3G-SDI 2006[2] SMPTE ST-2081 6G-SDI 2015[4] 6 Gbit/s 1080p120, 2160p30 SMPTE ST-2082 12G-SDI 2015[5] 12 Gbit/s 2160p60 SMPTE ST-2083 24G-SDI In development [9][10] 24 Gbit/s 2160p120, 4320p30

Cable Types – Video IP Solutions will be the future. Send video over a network. Newtek NDI Latency is an issue. Bandwidth is an issue. Not talking about “cat5 converters”
