Assessing Existing Environments In this video we will be discussing the assessment of the machines in the existing environment, and how we can use that information for planning purposes.

Assessment Tool Options A variety of tools are available for analysing existing SMB environments, including traditional tools like the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Kit, as well as third party solutions. There are also new cloud based tools included with Windows Analytics which you are licensed to use when a device has a Windows Pro or higher license. Before any large project that includes migrations and upgrades, it’s important to get an understanding of what is currently in use in the environment. For this video we will be focusing on the cloud based capabilities of Windows Analytics and the long term value it provides, but it’s also important to mention existing tools that may have been in use previously. The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit makes it easy to assess your current IT infrastructure for a variety of technology migration projects. The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP) is an agentless, automated, multi-product planning and assessment tool for quicker and easier desktop, server and cloud migrations. MAP provides detailed readiness assessment reports and executive proposals with extensive hardware and software information, and actionable recommendations to help organizations accelerate their IT infrastructure planning process, and gather more detail on assets that reside within their current environment.

Windows Analytics Moving forward, it’s important to understand how new tools like Windows Analytics can help you in the world of Office as a Service and Windows as a Service.

This information will help to identify what older Office add-ins may still be in use, and you might find that even though there are many installed, very of few them may still be used. Configuring Windows Analytics

Windows Analytics Requirements Add the Upgrade Readiness solution in Azure An Azure subscription is required to perform this, but charges relating to this solution are zero rated at the end of each month. Use the same Azure Active Directory environment for Windows Analytics as you are using for your Microsoft 365 Business subscription so that you can simplify account management and keep work accounts consolidated. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/upgrade-readiness-get-started Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro Ensure systems are up to date and configure and run the Upgrade Readiness deployment script docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/upgrade-readiness-deployment-script Windows 10 Pro If domain joined, use Group Policy settings to configure, if Intune enrolled, use MDM policy. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/mdm/dmclient-csp You can use either a Microsoft Account or a Work or School account to create a workspace. If your company is already using Azure Active Directory, use a Work or School account when you sign in to OMS. Using a Work or School account allows you to use identities from your Azure AD to manage permissions in OMS. You also need an Azure subscription to link to your OMS workspace. The account you used to create the workspace must have administrator permissions on the Azure subscription in order to link the workspace to the Azure account. Once the link has been established, you can revoke the administrator permissions. For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices you will need to download and run the Upgrade Readiness deployment script. Inside the Upgrade Readiness deployment script download there are two folders: Pilot and Deployment. The Pilot folder contains advanced logging that can help troubleshoot issues and is intended to be run from an elevated command prompt. The Deployment folder offers a lightweight script intended for broad deployment through your preferred software deployment system. We recommend manually running the Pilot version of the script on 5-10 machines to verify that everything is configured correctly. Once you have confirmed that data is flowing successfully, proceed to run the Deployment version throughout your organization. For a smaller organization where you may have access to all devices, running the Pilot script on all devices may be a good approach. For Windows 10 clients, please watch the extending Windows 10 management module for instructions on how to add the settings via Microsoft Intune. Upgrade Readiness is offered as a solution in Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS) and Azure Log Analytics, a collection of cloud based services for managing on premises and cloud computing environments. For more information about OMS, see Operations Management Suite overview or the Azure Log Analytics overview. If you’re already using OMS or Azure Log Analytics, you’ll find Upgrade Readiness in the Solutions Gallery. Click the Upgrade Readiness tile in the gallery and then click Add on the solution’s details page. Upgrade Readiness is now visible in your workspace. You can also If you are not using OMS or Azure Log Analytics, go to Log Analytics on Microsoft.com and select Start free to start the setup process. During the process, you’ll create a workspace and add the Upgrade Readiness solution to it.
