09/06/2019 Rapid Urbanization, Challenges and Planning for Secondary Cities.Increased Urban Poverty in Kampala HON. NAMUYANGU KACHA JENIPHER AND ENG. MBENYI DERICK KAMPALA, UGANDA Population: 42.8 Million(2017) Urban Population : 16.8% of Population 64 % of Urban Population in slums and Informal Setlements Kampala Capital City Population of about 2Million(40% of Urban Population) GDP: 25.53 Billion US Dollars(2016) Map OF Uganda

Main Urban Challenge/Priority 09/06/2019 Challange: Increased Urban Poverty The migration of residents from rural to urban areas has led to growing pockets of poverty in the capital since insufficient housing sends many to live on the streets. The poor of Kampala live in slums and nearly all citizens are unemployed. With a population of 1,189,142 people in the city, access to clean and safe water is limited to 65 percent. Lack of access to markets and technology has led several to abandon their villages and migrate to the city. Cities such as Kampala present hope for those smallholder farmers who were unable to sustain their families. Kampala has been the destination for thousands and because of this, the city has been unable to provide for the masses of new residents.

Project Intervention(s) 09/06/2019 The Government of Uganda has established the following programs to eradicate urban poverty Youth Livelihood Program(YLP) Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Fund program Review of National Urban Policy Cities Alliance:Uganda’s leadership is working to strengthen the implementation and communication strategy for the current NDP and SDG Goals mainstreamed in it.
