SECTION 2: CHAPTERS 7-13

On Deck The Yelnats Family Curse (continued) Nicknames & Perception (continued) Hierarchy Clues The Wreck Room

1. The Yelnats Family Curse Introduced to Elya Yelnats through flashback Told the story that earned his reputation as a “good-for- nothing pig stealing great-great-grandfather” Cycle of hope and disappointment that runs through the family Wrong place at the wrong time

1. The Yelnats Family Curse Storyline Hope Disappointment Elya Yelnats seeks the help of Madame Zeroni in hopes of finding love To marry Myra Menke Myra can’t decide and Elya proposes she marry Igor Elya Yelnats travels to America in hopes of starting over Learns to speak English, is married His barn is struck by lightning 3 times

2. Nicknames & Perception Irony in the nicknames the boys have given each other Stanley = Caveman Rex = X-Ray What is the truth beyond their perception? What about: Elya Yelnats Mr. Pendanski

2. Nicknames & Perception Character Perception Truth Elya Yelnats “Good-for-nothing pig stealer” A young man in love who makes an unfortunate, unintended mistake Stanley Starting a fight in the Wreck Room Nicknamed “Caveman” Trying to avoid conflict Weak, passive person Rex Nicknamed “X-Ray” Leader of the group, bosses people around Practically blind Wears glasses and is the smallest boy (factors typically associated with a bullying victim)

2. Nicknames & Perception Storyline Perception Truth Mr. Pendanski Sits with the boys to discuss what they’ll do when they leave Camp; encourages the boys to dream big, set goals and make the most of life Hypocritical – mentions that Zero is totally useless

3. Hierarchy Hierarchy: a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority How does hierarchy play a role at Camp Green Lake?

3. Hierarchy The Warden The Counsellors The Campers

3. Hierarchy How does hierarchy play in the role of the relationship(s) between the boys in Tent D? X-Ray as the leader asking Stanley to give him anything he finds while digging has a reward system When the water truck came, Stanley started to his place at the end of the line, but X-Ray told him to get behind Magnet, in front of Zero. Stanley moved up one place in line. (page 63)

Quick Write: Reflection What do you make of the hierarchical system X-Ray has in place? How does his reward system help him maintain power as the leader of Tent D?

4. Clues Camp Green Lake claims that campers are digging holes because “it builds character” The Warden is not interested in fossils The gold tube with KB engraved on it draws interest

WRECK ROOM 5. The Wreck Room What does it tell us about the boys at Camp Green Lake? Using details from the text, draw the Wreck Room at Camp Green Lake. WRECK ROOM

5. The Wreck Room Nearly everything in the room was broken; the TV, the pinball machine, the furniture. Even the people looked broken, with their worn-out bodies sprawled over the various chairs and sofas. X-Ray and Armpit were playing pool. The surface of the table reminded Stanley of the surface of the lake. It was full of bumps and holes because so many people had carved their initials into the felt. There was a hole in the far wall, and an electric fan had been placed in front of it. Cheap air conditioning. At least the fan worked. (pages 44-45)
