Flight Planning, Direct-To, and Route Tracking

To create a flight plan, click the Flt Plan button on the main toolbar a flight plan, click the Flt Plan button on the main toolbar

Click here to add a waypoint This is the Flight Plan Menu Here you can Load, Save, and Customize flight plans in APIC

For example, to add an airport to the flight plan, click here… Use this, the Add Waypoint menu to choose your waypoints for your flight plan, by selecting the corresponding buttons

APIC will first prompt you for the airport ID using this dialogue box If you dont know the airport ID, click cancel…

Enter the Airport ID here You may search by Airport ID, Airport Name, or City Name Once you have found the airport you want, click OK The Find Airport dialogue box will also be launched if you enter an Airport ID that does not appear in APICs database This will launch the Find Airport dialogue box

Highlight the desired Airport ID. Then click the OK button Note: If you click OK without selecting an Airport ID, APIC will use the first airport on the list

Here you can see that KPVU has been entered as the starting point of our flight plan To add successive waypoints, follow the same steps

…continue adding waypoints until your flight plan is complete… NOTE: To add a runway, you must first add the airport to which it pertains Select a runway, then click OK After adding an airport, when you click the runway button, the Select Runway dialogue box will appear with all the runways for that airport

Once you have entered in all of your waypoints, click the Activate button and APIC will create a flight plan Note: Clicking Cancel will cancel the entire flight plan, not just close the Flight Plan Window

The XTrk is your Cross Track. This value represents how far off of the original flight plan you are. Positive Values mean you are to the right, and Negative Values mean you are to the left The pink line is your flight plan path This shows the distance to our final destination Here we can see our ETA, next waypoint, and distance to it

KU77 SPANISH FORK SP If you want to add a waypoint during flight, just click on the Add Waypoint button Then use the Move Up/Move Down buttons to position waypoint in the Flight Plan in relation to the other waypoints

APIC will then redraw the Flight Plan According to the changes made

To save a created flight plan in APIC, hit the Save FltPlan Button Saved flight plans can be loaded by using the Find FltPlan Button

You can also view saved flight plans in Google Earth APIC Creates a.kml file in the directory: Program Files\Approach\Apic\Data that is named with the starting and ending points of the flight plan. For Example: If you had a flight plan set up to go from Los Angeles to St. Louis to New York, the file for that flight plan would be named LAX2JFK.kml

When you open the.kml file in Google Earth, it will display each waypoint and path between them WPT 1 WPT 2

To enable route tracking, open the Settings menu, then open the Geographical Data Menu APIC also has a route tracking feature, and outputs a.kml file of your route, also viewable in Google Earth Click the Route Tracking button to enable the route tracking feature Click Reset to clear the route

APIC will store your route to the route.kml file found in the directory: Program Files\Approach\Apic\Data You can open this file in Google Earth the same way as explained previously for saved flight plans

The Direct-To button has two different functionalities, depending if a current flight plan is active, or not #1 If a Direct-To flight plan is not currently active, then the Direct-To button will simply open the Flight Plan dialogue box #2 If a Direct-To flight plan is currently active, then the Direct-To button will redraw the Direct-To flight path from your current location. This feature is useful if you have strayed from the original Direct-To flight path

Or #2 Use the Direct-to Feature from the Airport Info Box by selecting a runway in the above menu, then clicking the Direct-To button
