7X 11-09-2016 Wednesday Changes in Working Conditions Objective: Describe how the Industrial Revolution changed working life in the United States. Do Now: page 395 #1b and 2b 1b. Samuel Slater’s Rhode Island System change employment practices in mills in several ways. First, his system started hiring whole families, rather than just men. Children and women began working in mills. His system also divided tasks into smaller and easier jobs that anyone can do – it created a lot of unskilled labor. He also had housing for the workers This created mill towns where families lived and worked in the same place. Samuel Slater also started paying his workers with store credit. Since the jobs were smaller and easier, it lowered the pay.

2b. Young women had several reasons for wanting to work at the Lowell Mills. Before the Lowell Mills, most young women could only work in family farms. Working at the Lowell Mills gave an opportunity to earn more money. Their wages were better than at other jobs. The Lowell Mills also provided young women with housing and 3 meals a day. The rooms were very clean and well kept. The girls were also encouraged to take classes and join clubs as a form of recreation. Economic impact  Workers will be on time or early. They can start making things right away. Businesses had more control over workers.
