Statistics Population/Sample Survey. Statistics Practice of collecting and analyzing data to make future decisions. For example, Lays Potato Chips offers.
Kinds of Samples Statistics is still fun. Random – Choose your population - 7 th graders/7 th grade teachers/7 th grade parents. – Put all the names in.

Statistics Unit 8 Day 2

Consider.. Which of the following would provide the best feedback on the interested group? Collect data from the population Collect data from the sample Why? Because we would have feedback from every people/objects in that group; whereas, a sample would only collect data from a few people/objects from the group causing the data to potentially be inaccurate.

Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, None Example Let’s poll the class on what type of ice-cream the class liked best: Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, None Polled 1 Student: Polled 3 Students: Polled 10 Students: Polled ALL Students: Which poll had the best representation of what the class’s favorite ice cream?

So why wouldn’t we always take data from the population instead of taking a sample? Too many people/objects Too much time Too much $ Inconvenient / Impossible Thus, samples provide quick, cheap way to gain information about the population.

Sampling Methods Random – Cluster – Systematic – Stratified – Everyone has an equal opportunity of being chosen.   Cluster – Divide the population into groups and randomly select SOME of the groups to collect data. Systematic – Select a random starting point, then choose every nth subject. Stratified – Divide the population into at least 2 group, and then pick SOME from EACH group.

Types of Experiments Observations – Experiments – Watches what happens/happened at draw conclusions.   Experiments – Researcher manipulates one variable and tries to determine how that impacts the result
