Childhood Nutrtion Serving sizes/portions: smaller! Children need a variety of nutrient-dense foods in small amounts, FREQUENTLY.

ADOLESCENCE This is a time of great activity and rapid growth. We grow and change so much over these 9 years of life.

ADOLESCENCE Teenagers need a variety of nutritious foods throughout the day. Follow the recommendations from myplate.

ADOLESCENCE Avoid high sugar and fat snack foods.

ADOLESCENCE MONITOR AMOUNTS OF CAFFEINE AND CARBONATED DRINKS. CAFFINE WILL CURVE THE APPETITE. THIS DOESN’T ALLOW ROOM FOR NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS.

ADOLESCENCE Most common pitfalls in the teen diet: Too much fats, oils, salt and caffeine. Too many sweets. Too few fruits and vegetables. Too little fiber.

ADOLESCENCE Cont… Not enough iron Skipping breakfast and or lunch Eating the wrong Breakfast foods

You can’t live a high energy life on a low energy diet! ADOLESCENCE You can’t live a high energy life on a low energy diet!

ADULT NUTRITION Adult: 22-60 years of age.

Adult Nutrition Metabolism slows down. Generally total food intake needs to be reduced.

Adult Nutrition Sedentary lifestyle creates a greater need for daily exercise. Exercising is the key to balancing food intake and output.

ELDERLY NUTRITION Elderly: 60 + years of age

Elderly Nutrition Aging adults have less sensitive taste buds. They are also less sensitive to smells.

Elderly Nutrition Because of less activity, they need: Less fat, sodium and calories in their diet More nutrient-dense foods. Daily exercise is still important!!!

Elderly Nutrition Elderly who live alone have a harder time eating a variety of foods. Malnutrition is a concern.
