School Delegation Orientation “Parent Council 101”

Agenda Welcome Introductions What is the MSDWT Parent Council? Being a School Representative Being a School Delegation Chair Thank You! Questions?

MSDWT Parent Council Mission MSDWT Parent Council is a group of parent advocates of MSDWT students who represent a diverse community in Indianapolis and believe that quality public education is an investment in the future. Members of the MSDWT Parent Council voluntarily give of their time to actively influence, with a collective voice, the direction of the District and support positive learning experiences that result in students who are productive contributors throughout their lives.

MSD Washington Township Our Vision: Superior Schools in a Supportive Community. Our Mission is to build the mind and character of every student by teaching the academic, creative, and social skills needed to achieve excellence.

Why be active in the MSDWT Parent Council? Because ….. MSD Washington Township's reputation for excellence is due in large part to 50 years of strong parent involvement and community support. To continue this tradition of excellence ALL of us must commit to staying informed on pertinent issues and taking action to see that excellence continues and our community remains strong. 5

Our Goals Empower Parents by providing resources and opportunities for them to be leaders in our school community Inform and Educate Parents by providing objective and pertinent information regarding our school district Elect School Board Members that we feel as parents, will move our school district forward.

What can I do as a School Representative? Stay informed Attend the monthly MSDWT Parent Council meetings Attend a MSDWT School Board meeting Keep abreast of school and district issues Communicate Listen to your friends, neighbors and others Share your knowledge and experience Get involved Be an advocate for our schools and our community Participate on a MSDWT Parent Council committee 7

What can I do as a School Delegation Chair? Manage the delegation Recruit new and prospective representatives Maintain a current membership list Send out meeting reminders Follow up on the attendance of representatives Provide contact info of key leaders to the MSDWT Parent Council Communicate with key leaders in your school Seek recommendations for (new) school representatives Learn of issues affecting your school Inform key leaders and the general community of district issues and activities
