Today’s Goal: Examine sixth graders’ “favorite poems.” Outcomes: Select a poem that captures your interest. Read aloud that poem to the class when it appears on the screen. Explain to the class why another sixth grader found this appealing. Identify what you like about each poem presented today. Evaluate the selected poems to determine which ones are the most appealing to you. Evaluate the creative expressions used to illustrate each poem and identify your favorites.

Starter #1: As you come into the room, you will find some papers strategically spread around the room, each set held together with a large paper clip. Find one set that appeals to you and take it to your desk. Carefully examine your packet until you receive further instructions.

Starter #2: For some reason, students—particularly sixth grade students—seem to love poetry. What is it about poetry that appeals to you?   The packets spread around the room are favorite poems of sixth grade students—my students, students I taught in Lexington. The assignment called for each student to find a favorite poem, explain why that poem appealed to them, and creatively illustrate that poem. When you see the poem you selected (and its illustration) appear on our front screen, raise your hand. You get to read it aloud to the class and explain why it was appealing to that student.
